HEFCE strategic review of sustainable development in higher education in England

January 2008

Summary

HEFCE commissioned the Policy Studies Institute, PA Consulting Group and the Centre for Research in Education and the Environment, to undertake a strategic review of sustainable development in higher education. This report measures a baseline of sustainable development activity in the higher education sector. It also allows us to learn from institutions' experiences about the conditions for embedding sustainable development, including barrier and drivers.

Due to the difficulties of measuring sustainable development the baseline is not a precise measure but it will allow us to demonstrate progress. The review shows that there is a lot of sustainable development activity in the sector but notes that much more could be done. It contains recommendations on how HEFCE and the sector could promote increased sustainable development activity.
