In 2013, HEFCE commissioned a progress review of Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) on behalf of all its public funders (the four UK higher education funding bodies, GuildHE and Universities UK).
Public funding for the Equality Challenge Unit is agreed in principle for a five-year period, from January 2011 to December 2015, subject to annual confirmation by each funder and a satisfactory review of progress in 2013. The overall purpose of this review was to consider ECU’s progress to date, in line with this funding agreement.
The review concludes that ECU’s work is central to the overall mission of higher education in the UK, and that it has made good progress to date. The review offers some recommendations aimed at helping ECU build on its work to date and to face future challenges and opportunities brought by the continuing pressure on public funding and the pace of change in the higher education sector.
The review report and recommendations were received positively by ECU, and by its Board and funders.
