Analysis undertaken by HEFCE has highlighted the significant contributions higher education (HE) providers are making through sponsoring academies, university technical colleges (UTCs) and free schools, and the benefits that sponsorship can generate for the schools, the HE providers and their local communities.

To understand better what a successful sponsorship relationship looks like for different HE providers, HEFCE commissioned York Consulting LLP in December 2015 to carry out qualitative research exploring the experiences of 20 HE providers involved in establishing, developing and sponsoring academies, UTCs and free schools. The study was completed in March 2016.

This report offers a thematic assessment of findings from the accompanying 20 qualitative case studies of HE providers across England that are engaged in sponsorship arrangements. The report provides a further insight into the sponsorship arrangements and has helped to inform the development of a practical guide for prospective HE providers looking to sponsor academies, UTCs and free schools.
