This report, commissioned by HEFCE from the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, provides an independent and external opinion on whether and how the programme of activities and events currently delivered by the Routes into Languages programme might be sustained and operate in the future.
The programme’s aims are to help ensure that higher education institutions take steps to enhance demand for and sustainability of modern foreign language provision, and to encourage more young people of all backgrounds to study languages at university. HEFCE has provided funding to the programme over the past 10 years of circa £10.5 million through a number of separate projects. This is part of HEFCE’s support for strategically important and vulnerable subjects.
The latest HEFCE-funded three-year programme, which was always signalled as the last, concludes in July 2016. HEFCE wishes Routes’ demand-raising work to continue, but alternative income sources or other means are essential for it to do so.
Following the discussion of the Leadership Foundation report by stakeholders, it was agreed that custodianship of Routes into Languages would pass to Universities UK International (formerly known as the International Unit).
