Figure 1 Total income by partner 2003-2010 (real terms)

Figure 1 shows income for the academic years 2003-2010 broken down by partner: small and medium-sized industries (SMEs), other (non-SME) commercial business, and non-commercial organisations such as the public and third sectors. Contract research is the largest of these indicators at around £983 million. SMEs spent most money on consultancy services while 'other non-SME commercial business' were the largest consumers of intellectual property (IP), accounting for over 60 per cent of all IP income.
