Dear Vice-Chancellor or Principal

2014 National Student Survey: Publication of data

1. This letter provides information on the next steps in the 2014 National Student Survey (NSS) process, including a timetable for when institutions will be able to access their results via the NSS results site and Unistats web-site. No action is required in response.

2. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all participating institutions for their commitment and contribution to the 2014 NSS.

Publication of the 2014 NSS results

NSS results web-site

3. From 1 August 2014 the NSS results dissemination web-site is changing, and will be managed by Texuna Technologies Ltd (Texunatech). This change does not apply to the running of the National Student Survey, which will continue to be managed by Ipsos MORI. Information regarding this change was provided to NSS results contacts at each institution in April.

4. Ipsos MORI will continue to provide access to previous NSS results until 31 July 2014. After this date access will be provided by Texunatech.

5. On 1 August, Texunatech will launch stage 1 of the NSS results dissemination site. Stage 1 will present institutions’ own detailed NSS data and can only be viewed by the institution concerned. This release will also include custom analysis functionality allowing institutions to interrogate their own data through the site. The agreed NSS contact at each institution will be sent further details of how to access the data closer to the time. All NSS data are subject to strict embargo until 12 August.

6. On 8 August, Texunatech will make available, on the NSS results site, a preview of all the 2014 HEFCE NSS institutional benchmark data. All NSS data are subject to strict embargo until 12 August.

7. On 15 August, Texunatech will make available, on the NSS results site, institutions’ detailed students’ comments for 2014.

8. On 21 August, Texunatech will launch stage 2 of the NSS results site. This will include access to all institutions’ comparable data through the custom analysis tool.

Publication of the 2014 NSS results on the HEFCE web-site

9. HEFCE will publish the 2014 NSS results on 12 August. The information will include sector summary data as well as complete subject-level data for all institutions.

Publication of the 2014 NSS results on the Unistats web-site

10. In August 2014, Unistats will undergo its annual update to display course data for the following academic year. As part of this, 2014 NSS data which meet the publication threshold (23 students and 50 per cent) will be published on the Unistats web-site together with the updated Key information Set (KIS) data. A circular letter will be published with further details.

11. The data on the Unistats web-site will be available for public access from 28 August 2014.

12. As part of the KIS submission process, from mid-July institutions will be able to access a report showing the Unistats data to be published for all of the courses for which they have submitted a KIS record, which will include the NSS public results. However, as stated in paragraph 5, complete NSS quantitative results will not be available through the dissemination site until 1 August. All NSS data are subject to strict embargo until 12 August.
