Awards enhance medical research
The success of the Clinical Senior Lectureship Awards was celebrated at a recent event.
Clinical academic training
We provide funding to support a number of senior lectureship awards in the clinical field. The objective of these awards is to build new, high-quality capacity and secure long-term sustainability and enhanced outcomes in research and teaching at senior lecturer level.
These awards are funded in partnership with NHS Trusts and universities in England, and aim to create a cohort of ‘new blood’ clinical senior lectureship posts.
Senior Clinical Lectureship Awards for Nurses, Midwives, Allied Health Professionals and Healthcare Scientists
We work with The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for England to run the Senior Clinical Lectureship Awards for Nurses, Midwives, Allied Health Professionals and Healthcare Scientists. The awards represent the pinnacle of the Clinical Academic Training Programme which supports individuals committed to developing a career combining research and clinical practice.
The Clinical Academic Training Programme was developed following the publication, in 2007, of the report 'Developing the best research professionals. Qualified graduate nurses: recommendations for preparing and supporting clinical academic nurses of the future' by the UK Clinical Research Collaboration Sub-committee for Nurses in Clinical Research.
We and the local NHS trusts are offering funding for up to 12 posts through three annual rounds of awards. Each post runs for five years and will normally be taken up at any time between November and 31 July of the academic year following the award.
Round two (2011) has now closed. We expect to open round three in May 2012.

Clinical Senior Lectureship Awards for Clinical Medicine and Dentistry
Since 2006 we have supported clinical senior lectureship awards for clinical medicine and dentistry. We developed these awards with UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC), as part of its commitment to building an expert research workforce to support clinical research and education in the context of established clinical training pathways.
This scheme has now closed.
