Data sources for mainstream QR funding

HEFCE's mainstream QR funding for research is allocated selectively according to quality. The source data we have used to calculate mainstream QR funding for 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 are described below.

The following measures are used in the QR funding formula:

Volume measure Source of data for 2007-08 Source of data for 2008-09 Source of data for 2009-10 Source of data for 2010-11
Category A FTE staff submitted to the RAE and attributable to quality levels 2*, 3* and 4* 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 2008 Research Assessment Exercise
Category A (and A* staff in post on the RAE census date) FTE funded from general funds and NHS funds 2001 RAE 2001 RAE
Research fellows 2006 Research Activity Survey 2007 Research Activity Survey
Research assistants 2006 Research Activity Survey 2007 Research Activity Survey

In the QR funding Excel file the column headed 'Quality-weighted volume' contains the volume measure multiplied by the quality weighting. For 2010-11, the following quality weightings were applied to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise quality profiles:

Quality level 4* 3* 2* 1* Unclassified
Quality weighting 9 3 10 0
