Veterinary Training and Research Initiative (VTRI)

The Veterinary Training and Research Initiative supported students and practising vets undertaking research to prevent or stop the progress of outbreaks of animal disease.

The initiative was jointly funded by HEFCE, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council, working closely with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

The initiative ran for five years from 2004. HEFCE contributed £2 million per annum for five years to participating English institutions. The available funds were allocated by a competitive bidding exercise. The funded projects in England were:

Animal susceptibility to infection and disease: do husbandry and welfare drive microbial colonisation and immune development

Led by Professor Tom Humphrey and Dr Mick Bailey, Department of Clinical Veterinary Science, University of Bristol

Cambridge Infectious Diseases Consortium

Led by Professor Ian McConnell, Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge

Food-borne zoonotic pathogens: transmission, pathogen evolution and control - a programme of training and research

Led by Professor Nigel French and Professor Malcolm Bennett, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Liverpool

Further information on the funded projects is available on the DEFRA web-site.
