Libraries, museums and galleries

In addition to funding research activities and infrastructure, HEFCE provides funding to support libraries, museums and galleries which are used by researchers.

We provide funding to support the Research Information Network, a national framework for research information provision that aims to co-ordinate the development of research information resources that meet the needs of UK researchers. We are supporting the UK Research Reserve (UKRR) in partnership with the British Library and higher education libraries to secure the long-term retention of, and access to, low-use printed research journals. After funding a successful 18 month pilot project, we committed £9.84 million to phase two of UKRR, to release up to 100 kilometres of shelf space, saving the sector up to £29 million in capital funds.

We also provide funds for the national research libraries.

The Museums and Galleries Fund supports museums and galleries whose collections are of wide research significance and whose costs are greater than the home institution can normally be expected to bear.
