Together with other UK higher education funding bodies and Research Councils UK, we provide financial support to Vitae, the UK organisation which champions the personal, professional and career development of doctoral researchers and research staff.

We also provide funding to and work in partnership with the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU), which works to further and support equality and diversity for staff and students in higher education.

'Every researcher counts'

During 2011, we funded Vitae to carry out a project, entitled 'Every Researcher Counts', to help universities understand, prioritise and make visible equality and diversity among their researchers. This project formed part of our implementation strategy for the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers.

The aims of the project were to:

  • increase support for Principal Investigators in integrating equality and diversity into the management of research staff
  • raise awareness of equality and diversity and good practice in researcher development
  • promote culture change that is needed to improve equality in research careers.

The output was a suite of online resources within a Researcher Development Framework
