Medical and dental students (MDS) survey

The annual survey of medical and dental students aims to measure the number of students beginning and completing studies in these areas.

The data helps us and the Department of Health assess the need to recruit more students in this area, and helps the Government plan the workforce in medical and dental professions. We also use these data as a basis for funding activity that supports medical and dental studies.

We do this on behalf of the Department of Health, the Scottish Funding Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Department for Employment and Learning in Northern Ireland.

The 2012 survey

We have asked higher education institutions in the UK with undergraduate medical or dental programmes to update data on the intake and output of medical and dental students in 2011-12 academic year. We have also asked them to supply details of the intake for 2012-13. The survey deadline was 19 October 2012.

For a more detailed guide about the 2012 survey, see our publication ‘Medical and dental students survey 2012’.
