Support to graduates in a difficult job market has been at the top of the agenda. Universities in the North West have responded to concerns about graduate unemployment with several initiatives offering internships. It is estimated that there are now in excess of 2,030 internships funded by a variety of sources.
In the North West there are schemes designed to support students to continue their studies, such as graduate bursaries for students studying Masters courses relating to the region's priority growth sectors. These are popular for students as they retain talent and align highly skilled graduates to growth sectors.
The University has provided interns to work with North West Vision and Media (NWVM) based in the new Media City complex in Salford. Bolton accredits one of their training programmes, Digital Pass, which trains new recruits in digital media by providing a series of training workshops followed by a six-month placement with a leading media company.
Through its network of industry partners, particularly in the media production and post production sectors, NWVM is able to provide each intern with invaluable industry experience. They can then apply the knowledge and skills developed through the workshops, and undertake the assessment work to secure the HE credits.
Each industry partner provides access to, and training on, the very latest technology. They also provide each intern with mentor support from an industry professional, and a thorough understanding of how the business operates.
