Coventry University

Work-based learning: combining capability and competence

This project extends the work of the existing work-based learning project at Coventry University. It focuses on embedding business-facing activity across the university, and increasing student numbers and the employer base.

The work aims to position the university as a key national player in raising the skills base. It will also build on successful work with major employers, including The AA, Carter and Carter, Caterpillar and Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust.

Through this work the university is creating a wholly owned subsidiary, Acua Ltd., and diversifying the products and services it offers. This will include the development of Foundation Degrees, Modern Apprenticeship schemes and other provision in part-time HE.

The project will focus on sectors which have been prioritised by West Midlands RDA including:

  • engineering and manufacturing (specifically aerospace, energy and process industries)
  • financial services
  • food, drink and retail
  • health and social care
  • information technology (including call centres)
  • transport and logistics (including security and facilities management).

Funding award : £4,641,000
