The programme aimed to explore gaps in the metrics that are currently available through the higher education-business and community interaction survey. Specifically, it aimed to improve the data available in the areas of:
The six micro-studies aimed to explore metrics in one of the four areas of focus listed above. The studies were based at six separate institutions, had limited scope, and ran for a short duration.

The joint HEFCE/UUK Sounding Board considered the final reports for the studies in July 2010.
