Estates and physical infrastructure

Our estates activity contributes to securing high-quality physical infrastructure which meets the needs of the higher education (HE) sector.

We expect a higher education institution's (HEI) estate to:

  • support the institution's mission
  • be sustainable in environmental, social and economic terms
  • be efficient and represent value for money.

Capital funding and estate management

We have developed an approach to capital funding that enables us to provide capital funding more flexibly and with lighter touch monitoring. Carbon performance and space efficiency are key factors.

Good practice

We have funded good practice in the following projects:

  • Centralised Teaching Laboratories
A case study of the programme required to establish and run sustainable, shared laboratory facilities with new management structures for technical staff.

Estates Management Statistics

With the other UK funding bodies we have supported the production of statistics on the management of HE estates.

These statistics provide management information for strategy development, resource allocation, target setting and benchmarking.

The Higher Education Statistics Agency now collects and publishes EMS.

Partnerships

We work in partnership with

  • UK Space Management Group
We fund the UK HE Space Management Group (SMG) to help institutions implement best practice in the management of space.
