Managing flexible retirement and extended working lives

Project reference : LGMF-233

Lead institution : Oxford Brookes University

This project, which ran from September 2010 to August 2011, will support the higher education sector to build management capability to deal with the challenges and opportunities presented by changes to the default retirement age (DRA).

According to the Chancellor of the Exchequer's spending review statement of 20 October 2010 the state pension age will be equalised by 2018 and then raised to 66 for both men and women by 2020.

The project was intended to:

  • identify and share good practice about different approaches to flexible retirement
  • learn from the experience of employers that are managing without a mandatory retirement age
  • develop dedicated tools and training to help the sector to respond to changes to the DRA.

Total funding : £64,296
