Project reference : LGMF-179
Lead institution : University of Durham
This project, which was completed in January 2012, developed a diagnostic toolkit that enables academic departments to enhance their performance, based on important traits, behaviours and attitudes that exist in excellent academic departments.
Key behaviours in leadership, governance and management were identified in sample high-performing departments in the University of Durham (the project leader) and four collaborating research-intensive institutions (the Universities of Birmingham, Cambridge, Exeter and Leeds). These findings were used to create a free online diagnostic toolkit for English universities and colleges. The toolkit and supporting resources provide a means for departments to assess their own culture and learn from best practice in the sector.
