Management and leadership training for new heads of academic departments

This project will build on the present collaborative practice of the 1994 Group of institutions by developing an induction type course for new Heads of Academic Departments, for which 15 institutions have signed up. This course will complement the institution-specific in-house courses already offered by dealing with generic management and leadership issues, and will additionally offer opportunities for sharing best practice, learning from practice and the building of inter-institutional networks. Attendance will usually be prior to starting in post, and the programme will assist new heads to perform effectively upon commencing their new positions. Participants will have additional on-going support from an experienced and trained mentor from a different institution.
