Transforming Policy and Practice in Dispute-Resolution in HEIs

Project reference : LGMF-097

Lead institution : University of the West of England, Bristol (previously Leeds Metropolitan University)

Mediation can provide an opportunity for the resolution of disputes at any stage in a dispute and can help avoid or reduce legal fees for all parties involved. The purposes of this project were to:

  • determine higher education institutions' (HEIs) experience with mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution
  • discuss ways of identifying disputes which are suitable for mediation
  • work with HEIs to develop training needs assessments for mediation.

These objectives were achieved in 2009, and in a further phase of work during 2010 an improving dispute resolution advisory service was set up. It will be available to all HEIs and further education colleges offering HE in FE programmes.

Total funding : £125,000
