Testing the appropriateness of the business in the community corporate responsibility and environment indices for the higher education sector

Project reference : LGMF-032

Lead institution : Leeds Metropolitan University

In 2005 when this project began good practice in reporting environmental and corporate social responsibility performance was limited to a small minority of universities in the UK.

In the Yorkshire and the Humber (Y&H) region eight universities participated in the voluntary Business in the Environment (BiE) Index. The methodology for data collection and reporting is well established in these institutions and other sectors, including local authorities, NHS Trusts and manufacturing. The methodology allows benchmarking of like organisations on a range of categories, including board level leadership, policy, objectives and targets, employee training, stakeholder communication, Estates Management Statistics, audit processes, supplier programme and environmental stewardship.

By developing the geographical scope of this good practice the project aimed to encourage a greater commitment to environmental management performance across higher education institutions UK-wide.

Total funding : £66,970
