Moving towards zero-waste in student halls of residence by providing reuse schemes for real use

Project reference : LGMF-112

Lead institution : London School of Economics

This project contributed to sustainable development by filtering out for reuse the renewable items students produce in their university halls of residence. Items are donated, stored and sold back at low cost to new students. This reduces demand on natural resources and saves money both for the university (waste disposal costs) and students, releasing funds for future student-led environmental projects. The items can also be donated to local community organisations, enhancing relationships and supporting low income groups.

The project increased student and staff leadership capacity for sustainable development as it requires a collaborative team effort.

The project was completed in 2010.

Total funding : £86,930
