Financial sustainability and TRAC (the Transparent Approach to Costing)
We recognise that managing academic and financial sustainability in universities and colleges is a complex activity. We have supported the development and implementation of the costing methodology, TRAC, as a tool for promoting sustainability in the HE sector.
Who promotes financial sustainability?
Two groups oversee financial sustainability and the development of TRAC in the higher education sector.
These are:
- Financial Sustainability Strategy Group (FSSG)
This is a high-level forum that considers strategic and policy development in academic and financial sustainability. - TRAC Development Group (TDG)
considers practical implementation of the methodology.
We have supported the development and implementation of TRAC in universities and colleges since the HE sector began to use it.

TRAC provides valuable management information to help managers at universities and colleges make decisions about academic and financial sustainability.
