Research workforce

The 2006 HE Workforce Framework incorporated data about researchers in addition to other staff employed in the higher education sector. Other work that looks specifically at the research workforce is described below.

Early stage researchers

In July 2005, we published a report about policy and practice in career development and human resource management for researchers at an early stage in their research careers.

Online survey

CROS (Careers in Research Online Survey) is a web-based survey tool which collates data from research staff in more than 50 HEIs in the UK about their experiences of a career in research in higher education. It started in 2001 as part of the response to HEFCE's fundamental review of research.

Data collected include opinions about employment conditions and management, career aspirations, available training and development opportunities. Participating HEIs can access data submitted by their own research staff (although individual responses are confidential) and benchmark institution-wide data against data from other HEIs.

Results from surveys run 2002 to 2005 are on the CROS web-site. 2006 onwards surveys are on Bristol Online Surveys.

An evaluation of CROS was carried out in 2002.
