Enhancement

We aim to support universities and colleges to maintain excellence and find continuing ways to improve the learning environment. This work is vital to meet student expectations, the challenges of global competition, and the increasing diversity of the student population.

Funding enhancement

We provide funds to support this agenda, by means of the Teaching Enhancement and Student Success allocation to institutions, and through our ongoing support for the Higher Education Academy (HEA), and the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme. Among other things the HEA is responsible for supporting the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching.

Technology

We encourage the embedding of technology-enhanced learning across the sector. Our partners in using technology to enhance learning are the HEA and the Joint Information Systems Committee, who help institutions achieve their aims and objectives for making best use of technology to support student learning. We continue to support the sector in building on the recommendations of the Online Learning Task Force, to help the UK HE sector maintain and extend its position as a world leader in online technology.

Skills and employability

The Council also supports work to promote skills and employability among higher education students. We encourage students to engage with their studies and the educational environment in which they find themselves through support for work on student engagement.

Future principles of enhancement

As part of our work to support continuing improvement in the learning environment, we have set out four principles that will inform our activity in this area.

These principles are:

  • HEFCE remains committed to excellence in learning and teaching
  • innovative practice remains at the heart of our approach
  • enhancement must be mainstream
  • strategic prioritisation and demonstrating value for money is essential.
