Providing information about higher education

Providing information about higher education (HE) plays a central role to the HE sector. We have always made this a priority, but this agenda is increasing in prominence.

Our work on this issue has three key strands. We aim to ensure that the information provided:

  • Informs people about the quality of HE and, in particular, gives prospective students information that will help them choose what and where to study
Much of our work focuses on aiding student choice. This includes the Unistats web-site , the National Student Survey (NSS), and our most recent development, KIS - Key Information Sets.
  • Can be used as evidence for quality assurance processes in institutions
Information for quality assurance purposes covers the NSS, the Destination of Leavers of Higher Education (DLHE), KIS items, and statistics derived from data collected through the Higher Education Statistics Agency and Independent Learner Record.
  • Can be used by institutions to enhance the quality of their HE provision
Institutions will also undertake a range of other enhancement activities such as those led by the Higher Education Academy, activities undertaken by the Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, the National Teaching fellowship Scheme, and the open educational resources initiative.

Steering group

All out work is overseen by the Higher Education Public Information Steering Group (HEPISG), chaired by Professor Janet Beer (Vice-Chancellor, University of Oxford Brookes).
