Information about higher education institutions as charities

This section provides links to charity-related information about higher education institutions (HEIs) in England that are either exempt charities or registered charities.

Gateway pages

Since 31 January 2011, each exempt charity HEI has been required to have on its web-site a 'gateway page' linking to core information about its status as a charity.

The gateway page should be updated by 31 January each year.

This list of links includes the 17 HEIs that are registered charities and the individual members of the Consortium for Dance and Drama, all but one of which are registered charities. We have encouraged, but cannot require, these institutions to develop a similar gateway page. We have therefore provided a link to their entry in the register of charities on the Charity Commission web-site.

The list does not include the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, which is a department of the City of London Corporation and not a charity.

Core information on the gateway pages

Each gateway page should include:

  • The legal name and correspondence address of the HEI. Any preferred name(s) used by the HEI should also be given.
  • The main constitutional document of the HEI (such as its Royal Charter, Memorandum and Articles, or Trust Deed). This should be the document that was in force in 2009-10, including any changes made in that year. There will also be a record of changes made in each year after 2009-10.
  • The names of the trustees on 31 January each year, together with a list of all other charities of which each trustee is then also a trustee.
  • The full audited consolidated financial statements for 2009-10 and each following year until (at least) five years of financial statements are available.

It is possible that some HEIs will provide more information than this (for example, a history of changes to constitutional documents, links to relevant Acts of Parliament, financial statements for previous years and/or for longer than the five-year minimum).

Difficulty accessing the information

If any of the links do not work, or if the information appears to be out of date, please let us know by e-mailing charityreg@hefce.ac.uk
