Support for research income from business

We provide additional support for research that universities and colleges carry out with business and industry. The funding amounted to approximately £64 million in 2012-13.

About the funding

The purpose of the business support element is to encourage universities to undertake research activity in collaboration with business and other non academic organisations.  It is a fixed sum of funding which we allocate between institutions in proportion to their qualifying income from industry, commerce and public corporations.

Qualifying income underpinning our allocations is reported by institutions in the HESA Finance Statistics Return. Further information is available in the most recent HESA guidance.
