Current work in widening participation and student opportunity
Our current work in widening participation and student opportunity covers a range of funding and specific activities. Together, this work supports the principle that people from any background with the potential to benefit from higher education (HE) should have the opportunity to do so.
Our funding for widening participation underpins three key areas of support for: students from disadvantaged backgrounds, access to HE for disabled students, and funds to help institutions retain students who are more at risk of not completing their course of study.
Beyond this core funding, we are carrying out work in the following areas:
- We collect information from universities and colleges – in the form of strategic assessments – that describes their overarching approach to widening access, student success and social mobility.
- We also administer the National Scholarship Programme on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. This programme is designed to directly benefit students from disadvantaged backgrounds as they enter HE.
