Additional student numbers for Lifelong Learning Networks

Lifelong Learning Networks (LLNS) have been allocated additional student numbers (ASNs) through one of two models:

  • Under model 1 ASNs are allocated to individual institutions within the LLN partnership as part of the mainstream teaching grant. Additional FTEs are incorporated within overall funding, conditional upon delivery of growth.
  • In model 2 the lead institution holds ASNs outside the mainstream teaching grant on behalf of the whole LLN. They can be distributed and re-distributed among partners according to LLN priorities and the lead institution needs to provide summary information through a separate table as part of the Higher Education Students Early Statistics Survey.

LLNs have been allocated ASNs through either of these two models according to the specified model criteria.

More detailed advice was set out in the monitoring letter that was circulated to LLNs in May 2006. This letter covers the processes for the reporting of ASNs and the methods for data returns.

Following consultation with LLNs, we sent further guidance regarding the continued flagging of LLN learners on the HESA record to all LLNs currently within their HEFCE funding period in January 2010. We will also include guidance for all planning officers in the pre-collection circular for the next HESA collection.
