Summary
Cumbria Higher Learning (CHL) is a partnership involving all the providers of higher education in Cumbria using the established model of lifelong learning networks. The mission of CHL is to develop county-wide progression routes into higher education for all learners. The work of CHL is divided into four strands of activity:
- Curriculum for progression - This will focus on four different target groups with delivery at Lakes College West Cumbria in Workington and Whitehaven, Furness College in Barrow, University of Cumbria - Newton Rigg Campus in Penrith, Kendal College and Carlisle College. The curriculum developed will address progression opportunities in work based learning and the distributed delivery model.
- Student learning plans - Each student will have support to develop and manage their own learning and will be supported through personal tutorials based on the systems further education colleges use currently. This activity will build on the work of the partnership between Information, Advice and Guidance and Connexions and on Joint Information Systems Committee e-portfolio pilots and developments. Tracking systems will be devised and put in place to monitor student progress throughout the network.
- Progression arrangements - This is an essential feature of CHL. It will include:
- mapping of current work
- developing access and bridging modules and Year 0 programmes to fill any gaps
- putting in place progression accords and scoping and implementing a credit transfer scheme.
- Distributed learning - A web portal to enable learners to access information about their own learning will be developed. It will be linked to providers' web pages and give access to online learning. This strand will capitalise on the advantages that new technology can bring to distributed learning, recognising that a variety of learning, teaching and assessment approaches will be needed.
