Summary
The Greater Merseyside and West Lancashire Lifelong Learning Network has been developed through consultation, collaboration and partnership between Edge Hill University, the University of Liverpool, the Open University, 14 further education colleges, local education authorities, Learning and Sector Skills Councils, Liverpool City of Learning, Aimhigher and other agencies.
The LLN aims to map and articulate progression routes from level 2 up to level 7 for vocational learners of all ages and experience.
The project will also develop new provision, to satisfy the needs and demands of learners, employers and providers. To do this it has been awarded 470 additional student numbers over two years. A simple and transparent credit framework agreed with partners in the first instance and, in time, within and between regional LLNs will allow accumulation and transfer of credits throughout the North West. This will enhance opportunities for learners to study at a time and place most suited to their needs.
Opportunities for synergy with Edge Hill’s Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning project (SOLSTICE) are being developed with further education partners, which will extend online and blended learning support.
Three sector specific strands have been selected for initial development:
health and social care, including integrated children’s services and community development
creative and cultural industries
hospitality, tourism, sport and active leisure.
All three strands have been identified by the North West Development Agency and Learning and Skills Council as skill shortage areas requiring growth to meet industries’ needs in the North West.
