Higher education summer schools 2008 to 2011
We invested £10.5 million in the summer school programme for 2008 to 2010. Aimhigher partnerships delivered part of the programme and higher education (HE) providers provided additional summer school provision by matched funding with HEFCE.
Match-funded summer schools were not funded by HEFCE after 2010, but the funding for Aimhigher summer schools was extended to cover 2010-11. We made available £1.46 million for partnerships to align the dates of the mainstream Aimhigher and Aimhigher summer schools programme. The Aimhigher programme ended in July 2011.

About the programme
The summer school programme aimed to give young people a taste of university life that would help them decide whether to apply for HE and what to study. Summer schools were organised by Aimhigher partnerships and by individual higher education institutions (HEIs) and further education colleges (FECs). They were particularly focused on young people who were less familiar with HE.
Research on summer schools
We published the following research on Aimhigher summer schools:
- 'Aimhigher summer schools: Analysis of provision and participation 2004 to 2008' (HEFCE 2009/11)
- 'Aimhigher summer schools: Participants and progression to higher education' (HEFCE 2010/32).
Sector impact assessment
In developing the summer school programme, we formally assessed its impact on the HE sector in terms of regulatory burden, equality and diversity, and sustainable development.
